Talking About Books

When you and your child have something to focus on together, such as a book you are reading, the conversation often flows. You can talk about the pictures or the characters in the book. And here are some additional topics for conversation that you might try while you are reading a book to your child:

Discussing how the story is like something in your child’s life or your:

“That’s like …”
“That reminds me of …”

Noting a favorite or funny part:

“That was funny, wasn’t it, when …”
“I liked the part when…”
“What part did you like best?”

Inviting your child to notice the details of the pictures:

“Look at…”
“What do you see in the picture?”

Pointing out the people or animals in the book and what they are like:

“That (person or animal) is fun, isn’t he?”
“What do you think (the character) is going to do?”
“What would you do?”
“What do you think (The character) is thinking?”

Wondering what might happen next:

“What do you think is going to happen?”
“I think (event) might happen.”

The Value of Reading Aloud to Children

When you read to your child, you:
*Show that you enjoy reading books and demonstrate that reading can be magical and great fun.
* Invite the child to have fun while listening to a story.
* Invite the child to join in on parts of the book that showcase enjoyable language, such as a rhythmical, repeating refrain.
* Create interest in other books.

Hablando Sobre Libros

Cuando usted y su hijo tienen algo en que puedan enfocarse juntos, como leer un libro, la conversación se da por sí sola. Usted puede hablar sobre los dibujos o personajes en el libro. Aquí hay temas adicionales para una conversación que usted puede tomar en cuenta cuando lea un libro con su hijo:

Discutiendo como la historia se relaciona en la vida de su hijo o la de usted:

“Es como…..”
“Eso me recuerda de…”

Observar una parte cómica o favorita:

“Eso esta chistoso, cuando…”
“Me gusto la parte cuando...”
“¿Qué ves en las dibujos?”

Invite a su hijo a observar detalles en los dibujos:

“Mira los…”
“¿Qué ves en los dibujos…?”

Señalando a la gente o animales en el libro y que es lo que les gusta:

“¿Esa persona o animal es divertido, que no?”
“¿Qué crees que los personajes van a hacer?”
“¿Tu que harías?”
“¿Qué tú crees que el personaje está pensando?”

Preguntándose que pasará después:

“¿Qué piensas que va a pasar?”
“Yo pienso que esto va a suceder.”

Al leerle a su hijo/a, usted:
 * Muestre que usted disfruta el leer libros y demuestra que la lectura puede se mágica y divertida.
* Invite a su hijo/a a disfrutar mientras escuchan la historia.
* Invite a su hijo/a a acompañarle en la lectura.
* Fomente el interés por otros libros.
